​Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego 

     Serafin Paredes estableció el Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego en el año 2001 con tres objetivos principales. Esos objetivos son, tener un lugar donde sus estudiantes puedan ampliar sus conocimientos musicales, continuar su educación después de la escuela secundaria y conectarse con su cultura a través de la música. Para ayudar a lograr estos objetivos, en el 2003, Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego se convirtió en el primer y único mariachi sin fines de lucro en San Diego.
     Los miembros de Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego deben mantener un cierto promedio de calificaciones durante la escuela secundaria para seguir siendo miembros del mariachi. Para mantener a los estudiantes motivados a continuar su educación después de la escuela secundaria, Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego les daría les otorga una pequeña beca para ayudarlos a pagar sus gastos universitarios. Los antiguos y actuales miembros de Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego han continuado su educación en instituciones como San Diego City College, San Diego Mesa College, Southwestern College, San Diego State University, California State University Dominguez Hills, University of California San Diego, University of San Diego, George Mason University, University of San Francisco, National University, and Stanford University.

     En el año 2003, Serafin Paredes asistió a la Conferencia Internacional de Mariachi en Tucson, donde vio a los estudiantes interactuar y aprender de músicos de mariachi profesionales a través de talleres educativos. Estando allí, Paredes fue inspirado a traer su propia conferencia a San Diego. Durante los últimos 14 años, Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego ha sido sede de su Conferencia Anual de Mariachi en marzo, donde estudiantes de San Diego y otras partes de los Estados Unidos y México se reúnen durante 2 días y muestran su talento. El propósito de este evento es brindar a los estudiantes un espacio para dominar sus habilidades, desarrollar habilidades de liderazgo y, principalmente, aprender a respetar la rica y viva tradición del folklore mexicano.
     A lo largo de los años, Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego ha tenido la oportunidad de viajar y presentarse en lugares como San Juan Capistrano, Los Ángeles, Sacramento California, Tucson Arizona, Albuquerque y Santa Fe, Nuevo México, Tijuana, Baja California y Guadalajara, México.  En el 2018, el grupo tuvo el privilegio de viajar a Japón y tocar en Nagoya, Osaka, Kioto y Tokio junto a la orquesta de la Universidad de San Diego; Greater San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Sergio Caratachea, Javier Rodriguez y Yoshi Oshima.

 

     Serafin Paredes established Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego in 2001 with three main goals.  Those goals being, to have a place where his students could further their musical knowledge, continue their education after high school, and connect with their culture through music.  To help achieve these goals, in 2003 Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego became the first and only non-profit mariachi in San Diego.  
     Members of Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego had to maintain a certain grade point average during high school to remain a member of the mariachi.   To keep students motivated to continue their education after high school, Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego would give members a small scholarship to help pay for their college expenses. Former and current members of Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego have continued their education at institutions such as San Diego City College, San Diego Mesa College, Southwestern College, San Diego State University, California State University Dominguez Hills, University of California San Diego, University of San Diego, George Mason University, University of San Francisco, National University, and Stanford University to name a few.
     In 2003, Serafin Paredes attended the Tucson International Mariachi Conference where he saw students interacting and learning from professional mariachi musicians through educational workshops. Being there, inspired Paredes to bring his own conference to San Diego. For the past 14 years, Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego has being hosting their Annual Mariachi Conference in March, where students from San Diego and other parts of the United States, and Mexico get together for 2-days and showcase their talent. The purpose of this event is to give students a space to master their skills, develop leadership skills, and mainly, to learn to respect the rich and living tradition of Mexican folklore.
     Throughout the years, Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego has been given the opportunity to travel and perform in places like San Juan Capistrano, Los Angeles, Sacramento California, Tucson Arizona, Albuquerque and Santa Fe New Mexico, Tijuana, Baja California, and Guadalajara, Mexico. In 2018, the group had the privilege to travel to Japan and perform around Nagoya, Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo alongside the Greater San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Sergio Caratachea, Javier Rodriguez and Yoshi Oshima.
